Testing results of verbal acumen are as low as they’ve ever been. Currently the projections for the numbers of functionally illiterate US residents stands at nearly 11 million. All other knowledge is based on the critical step of first learning how to read. For this reason, a large amount of parents choose to purchase computer software which can give their child reading instruction. The ability to read opens the door to numerous other subjects. If a child cannot read then he cannot learn through the textbooks of any other subject. Poor reading skills can make it virtually impossible for a child to reach his or her full potential. Being able to read is an important factor in success in a lot of aspects of life.
Children in the US are taught to read by the use of one of these two methods. The phonics and whole word methods are the two methods used. The drawbacks and benefits will vary differently between each scenario. It has been proven that more children learn with the phonics method than any other method currently available today. Using this approach, it is possible to commit to memory not only the name of each of the letters of the alphabet but also the phonetic sound that is associated with each of them. Next students learn to combine sounds in order to read entire words.
One of the disadvantages of this method is that students often get bored while memorizing their letters and sounds and simply give up. If the child focuses too much on sounding out a word it can become segmented and lose it’s meaning.
The whole word style of teaching asks kids to memorize the form of the entire word. Instead of learning sound words out children are trained to remember whole words. This method, which works best with kids who cannot sound out the words they read, was originally developed for the deaf.
