One of the most adaptable building materials available is concrete. You can make almost anything with concrete, from fancy vanities to drives. While you do not need a large amount of skill to work with concrete it can be very physically demanding. Before you start working with concrete you will need to have some basic tools. To make the forms for the concrete you’ll need woodworking tools as well as a saw, level, string level, hammer, and tape measure. You may also need a pry bar for taking apart your forms once the concrete has cured.

There are other tools you will need to both prepare and finish the concrete. These include shovels, hoes, screeding board, fiddle and float. To make concrete you mix together Portland cement with sand and gravel. These materials are combined with water to make a thick liquid and then be put into wooden or metal forms.

Wet concrete is very heavy and will need robust forms to hold it. There are plenty of methods to purchase concrete including bags of cement, Quickrete which is a mix of Portland cements with the needed aggregates, and prepared mix which is brought to the job site pre mixed with water.

Quikrete is sometimes used for tiny projects. When making a concrete path or slab your fist step will be the clear the area of any waste or perils. The area will have to be leveled and compacted at the proper depth. You will get the best results if the ground is kept damp. You’ll then use two by 6 boards to create a form. The boards can be held in place with stakes on their back sides. Hardboard or quarter inch plywood can be used to create curved areas of your form. Ensure that the pinnacle of your concrete form is level with the desire grade. Use a carpenter’s level or string level to double check.
