How To Train A Dog To Play Games
On January 30, 2010 in Uncategorized
Here’s my dog training tips for playing the retrieval game. Retrieving is a game enjoyed by most dogs. Hunting dogs and sheep-dogs in particular love to do it, but many terriers also love to chase after a stick or a ball and bring it back to the boss.
You can start early with training a dog to fetch by calling it whenever it has something in its mouth, followed by the friendly command “Fetch!” If the dog comes to you with its toy, praise it and exchange the toy for a small biscuit before throwing the toy again. You can perfect this later, but in the beginning it is enough just to stimulate retrieving.
If your dog is holding something in its mouth which you would prefer it not to have, such as a shoe, let the animal retrieve it and then throw something that is allowed. For retrieving, it is better to use a toy or a special retrieving block instead of a stick or a branch. These can have sharp points and there is a real danger of an enthusiastic retriever being injured through them.
