One more popular style of antique American wall clock

For a lot of people picking up is a highly pleasurable past-time. One actually fun item to gather is antique wall clocks. Throughout the years they’ve been made in several different styles to suit the style of the age when they were made. One of the hottest Yank antique wall clocks is the banjo clock. This clock gets its name since it seems like a the wrong way up banjo. Banjo clocks were designed by several different American clockmakers at the start of the twentieth century. Often they were produced from mahogany and included brass elaborations along their sides which resembled the frets on the neck of a banjo. There were numerous variations of the banjo clock including models which were embellished with paintings and those that were in the shape of a lyre.

An additional widespread design of antique Yankee wall clock is the gallery clock. These clocks were pretty much all dial without much of a casing below the face of the clock. This design of clock was seen rather frequently in public buildings such as churches and courthouses. Schoolhouse clocks started to appear in the 1850s. These clocks resembled gallery clocks with additional framing around the dial. Frequently they would have short wood cases below the face which had a small pane of glass so you could see the movement of the pendulum.

One great antique Yankee wall clock that’s terribly rare these days is the mirror clock. These clocks were so frail that not many of them have survived. Usually these clocks would feature a dial on the top of a rectangular case and a mirror on the bottom. The pendulum would swing behind the mirror. The frames for mirror clocks were most often wood such as birch or pine.
