Many paramedics and nurses have switched over to physician assistants. To be considered for a physician assistant program one must have at least a bachelor’s degree and approximately four years of some type of medical training. If you want to work hard and pursue a medical profession, then physician assistant school is right for you. But for specific requirements, the student should refer to the school of their interest. The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant has recognized about 130-140 physician assistant schools today.
Medical training is a core component of this intensive program since physician assistants work so intimately with doctors. Physician assistants need to receive similar practice in diagnosing and treating people as doctors do. Doctors can thus receive balanced support from their physician assistants when they work together. The average physician assistant program last a little over two years and all programs must meet the same set of standards. Classes for the program is based on classroom and lab work, like most medical fields. Students will train in anatomy, pathophysiology, pharmacology, clinical practice and physical diagnosis. Following graduation, to maintain certification, a physician assistant must take 100 hours of continuing education every two years and retest every six.
